1. Long Live VEG! - 9-year-old Food Blogger Gains Attention

Martha Payne, a 9-year-old food blogger from Scotland who has been getting a lot of media attention lately when local authorities banned her blog which contained photos and ratings of her school’s lunches, has been given her blog back.

On June 15, the Argyll and Bute Council overturned its ban that stopped Payne from posting photos of her meals.  Read their statement here.

What triggered the Argyll and Bute Council to ban the blog in the first place?  Scotland’s Daily Record recently published and article titled “Time to Fire the Dinner Ladies” with a photo of Payne with Scottish celebrity chef Nick Nairn.

“This morning I was taken out of maths by my head teacher and taken to her office,” wrote Payne in her post last Thursday which she titled “Goodbye”.  ”I was told that I could not take any more photos of my school dinners because of a headline in a newspaper today.”

Councillor McCuish stated that Payne was not at fault but that the paper “inflamed the situation”, blaming their “inaccurate and abusive attack” on the school’s dining hall staff and catering services.

Payne, or Veg by which she goes by, started the NeverSeconds six weeks ago as writing project and to help raise money to buy a Mary’s Meal kitchen and has gotten nearly 2 million hits and counting.   Since then, she has raised £45,889.46 which buys more than one kitchen, said Payne. “It could be many kitchens or one kitchen feeding many children for years”, said Payne on her post just last Friday.

Payne rates her food by her “health-o-meter” and even gives her meals a health rating.  She even goes as far as counting how many hairs she finds in her meals which fortunately has maintained a clean zero.

“I only write for my blog not newspapers,” said Payne on her “Goodbye” post.

Heads up to Payne who showed that even the younger generation is conscious about what they eat as shown by Payne’s 5 out of 10 rating on last Tuesday’s macaroni meal.  Not only that, but it shows the power of the internet in the younger generation, more specifically blogging.

Cheers to you VEG and all your efforts!

Check out Payne’s blog NeverSeconds and make sure to show her your support!
